How often should my canine friend be groomed?

The following is a guideline as to how often your pet should be groomed (pets that are brushed daily when dry and sport an active length cut). Exceptions are long or show cuts that need to be groomed every 2-3 weeks.

Bichon Frise 4-6 weeks
Cocker Spaniel 4-6 weeks
Golden Retriever 8-10 weeks
Lhasa Apso 4-6 weeks
Shih Tzu 4-6 weeks
Poodle (nonshow cut) 4-6 weeks
Schauzer 4-6 weeks
Springer Spaniel 6-8 weeks
Terriers (most) 6-8 weeks

Dogs that are shedding and or blow their coats may come in more often for a bath and full brush out. Small dogs such as Bichons, Shih Tzu, and Lhasa's should be bathed, hand dried and brushed out in between full grooms to keep a fresh MATT FREE coat.

Why shave my pet?

The term matted is used when the hair or undercoat is tangled and a comb can not be combed through the coat. *Removing matts can be painful and often impossible *Matts left for too long keep growing every time your pet gets wet or damp becoming tighter and tighter against your pet's skin. If not dematted (at the begining stages) or shaved out later, the matts may get so tight that they twist and rip the skin, leaving open wounds on your pets skin. Usually these type of skin wounds are not detected under the coat, until the matts are shaved way. This may contribute to other health problems not to mention uncomfortable and down right painful for your furry friend. *Shaving is the alternative, allowing you to detect any underlying skin conditions. This will allow ensure the skin can breathe and be healthier. *Frequent brushing with the proper tools on a dry coat can eliminate the need for shaving. NOT SURE what brush to use or how to brush correctly? Jaycee would be happy to help you out and even show you the proper way to brush your pet. IF YOUR PET GETS WET, hand dry him/her with a blow drier on low and brush out the dry coat. Brushing a wet dog is a losing battle, as soon as your pet lays down on its freshly brushed wet or damp hair the hair and undercoat matts. Think what happens when we go to bed with wet hair? Pets hair also has an undercoat. Thick wet matted hair!!!! OUCH!

What about cats?

It is strongly recommended that cats with matted fur be shaved down as their skin is very thin, rips easily and dematting is very painful. Imagine trying to brush out dreadlocks, OUCH! Ask about the many different styles of cat cuts. Regular brushing with a slicker brush or a comb for the long coat breeds can prevent your cat from developing matts. To cut down on dander try regular bathing. It is sure to make your feline feel purr-fect, but do not forget to dry your friend as wet fur can cause matting or worse, illness. Never let your wet kitty out in the cold. Using a hair dryer on low heat and low speed will dry them up in a flash. Do not want the hassle? Give us a call and book your feline an appointment. They can enjoy a bath and a brush out here, with no mess or stress to you.
